EAST LANSING — Beal City fought hard until the very end, but the Aggies came up short in the Division 4 baseball state championship on Saturday, losing to Gabriel Richard, 4-3.

Facing a 3-0 deficit in the sixth inning, Beal City pulled closer with a 2-RBI triple by Jack Fussman to bring the Aggies within one.

The Pioneers added an insurance run in the top of the seventh, which proved to be key. Beal City added another run in the bottom of the seventh on a single by Brayden Haynes. The Aggies still had runners on first and second with one out, but Gabriel Richard turned the double play to end the game and win the state title.

Beal City ends its season with a 30-3 record and the state runner-up trophy, along with conference, district and regional titles.
