We’re less than a month away from puck drop for the eighth annual Guns and Hoses hockey game.

“It started as a single hockey game to support one of our local police officers whose son had eye cancer,” said Tony Posey, a player participating in the game. “It was intended to be a one year event just to support him, and the turnout was just amazing so we started a non profit board.. and it’s turned into an annual event.”

One of this year’s beneficiaries is John Sandula.

Sandula receives regular treatments for esophageal cancer and is set for surgery at the Cleveland Clinic in October.

“I have a 50% chance of beating this but I have faith in god that I’m going to be that 50% that beats this,” said Sandula.

The Grand Traverse Guns and Hoses game has raised more than $100,000 over the past eight years for individuals and families in need.

“It’s overwhelming but in a good way. I thank God every day for my community’s support because i would never in a million years have expected this type of support… There are so many people out there that deserve this and i think why me… You feel guilty, but you feel appreciative,” said Sandula.

Sandula isn’t the only beneficiary for this year’s game. His youngest daughter Snow, who is dealing with her own medical condition, is a beneficiary as well.

“It’s kind of nice going through it as a team because we’re able to support each other…I know what she’s going through and she knows what I’m going through… we’re a power team aren’t we?” Sandula said while fist bumping his daughter.

There will be a silent auction and 50/50 raffle. Ticket sales and merchandise will go towards the Sandula family.

“I am just very appreciative for this organization for what they’re doing for my family…It means the world to us I am very thankful for my community my friends my church… We have faith in God that we’re going to be ok, aren’t we?,” said Sandula.
