Week 6 of the 2021 high school football season in northern Michigan features a matinee meeting of unbeatens in Vestaburg and a top-10 matchup in Traverse City.
Friday, Oct. 1
Sault Ste. Marie (4-1, 3-1, NMFC Legends) at Grayling (3-2, 1-2 NMFC Legends), 7 p.m. – Our Sports Overtime Game of the Week, these two teams are still in the hunt for the NMFC Legends championship but need some help from other league members. Both teams played league-leader Kingsley tough. This is the third meeting all-time and first since 1989 after last year’s contest was scrapped because of the COVID-19 shortened season.

D4 No. 6 Cadillac (4-1, 2-1 Big North) at D2 No. 7 Traverse City Central (4-1, 3-0 Big North), 7 p.m. – A win here for Traverse City Central secures at least a share of a third straight conference championship. With the exception of a season-opening loss to Division 3 power DeWitt, Central has rolled through the opposition, outscoring its last four opponents 214-28. Cadillac is eyeing its third straight win after falling to Traverse City West in its league opener. Central leads the all-time series at 20-10.

Charlevoix (4-1) at East Jordan (4-1), 7 p.m. – The Red Devils are off to their best start since 2016 and are currently tied with Frankfort atop the NMFC Legacy. The Rayders have picked up where they left off last year and have won three straight since falling to Boyne City. Charlevoix has dominated the all-time series since 1950, leading 39-14-2. The Rayders won the last meeting 14-7 in 2019.

St. Ignace (0-5, 0-2 NMFC Legacy) at Johannesburg-Lewiston (0-5, 0-3 NMFC Legacy), 7 p.m. – On paper this doesn’t jump out as a great contest. But throw out the records, as traditionally this is a great rivalry game. In the past, the winner of this matchup would go far in the NMFC Legacy title race. The Cardinals have won four straight in the series including an 81-12 victory a year ago. The two teams have split the first 10 meetings in the series.
Saturday, Oct. 2
8-Player No. 3 Portland St. Patrick (5-0, 2-0 Central Michigan 8-Man) at Vestaburg (5-0, 2-0 Central Michigan 8-Man), 2 p.m. – Vestaburg is off to its first 5-0 start since 2006, which coincidentally, is the last time the Wolverines beat the Shamrocks. This marks Vestaburg’s first test of the season, as St. Patrick has played in three of the last four Division 2 state championship games. St. Patrick leads the all-time series at 13-6 and won last year’s meeting 46-18.
