VESTABURG — Vestaburg has had one of its best football seasons in years thanks to an offense that has averaged 44 points per game.
After finishing the year 0-9 in 2018, the Wolverines made the switch to 8-man football and they went 7-7 in their first two years.
This season, the team came out on fire with five straight wins where they scored 44 or more points in every game they played along with one forfeit win. Their winning streak came to an end with a pair of tough losses to Portland St. Patrick and Merrill.
“They want the respect that they’re not getting right now that they’re a team to reckon with,” Vestaburg head coach Danny Ryckman said. “I think that it drives them. They’re a driven group of young men.”
The seniors on this year’s team remember that 0-9 season when they were freshmen. They feel proud to reach this point of holding a 5-2 record with the end of the regular season nearing.
“We’ve got more athletes this year, more experience, more seniors,” Vestaburg senior Cole Dailey said. “I feel like we’re going to go deep in the playoffs and we just played with one of the best teams in the state (Portland St. Patrick) and lost by a point.”
“I think we got kids just to buy in and they really had this hope for this season,” Vestaburg senior Hayden Palmer said. “We’ve got a bunch of seniors on the team. We’re building it.”
The Wolverines will have another tough test this week when they face Marion, a team who just had its first loss this past week against Suttons Bay.
