Five local volleyball teams will compete in the state quarterfinals on Tuesday in their respective divisions.
Cadillac returns to the state quarterfinals after making a run to the semifinals last season.
This year, the No. 8 Vikings will face No. 5 North Branch in the Div. 2 quarterfinals. These two are familiar with meeting each other at this stage of the postseason, as this will be the third time since 2014 they play each other in the quarterfinals. North Branch won the previous two meetings. They also met in the state semifinals in 2009 with the Vikings losing that matchup as well.
Their matchup will be at Midland with a 7 p.m. start.
McBain will make its first appearance in the state quarterfinals since 2009 when the Ramblers take on Calumet on Tuesday. The Ramblers picked up an impressive 3-set win over Beaverton for the regional title. The Beavers knocked Calumet out of the playoffs in the quarterfinals last season.
The Ramblers know what to expect from Calumet after playing them earlier in the season.
“Perennial powerhouse. We know that they play solid defense,” McBain head coach Shawn Murphy said. “They are disciplined so we’ve got our work cut out but I’m excited to get there and I know these guys are too.”
Their game will start at 6 p.m. at Grayling on Tuesday.
Traverse City Christian will make just its second appearance in the state quarterfinals. The only other time they advance this far was in 2008 when they lost to Bay City All Saints.
The No. 5 Sabres will face No. 9 Mt. Pleasant Sacred Heart in a top-10 matchup.
This will be the Irish’s eighth appearance in the state quarterfinals since 2010, but they have never advanced to the state semifinals, with five of their losses coming to Leland.
Their game on Tuesday will start at 6 p.m. at Chippewa Hills, and they will face the winner of Inland Lakes and Ironwood in the state semifinals.
Inland Lakes will make its first appearance in the state quarterfinals since 1994 when they lost to Glen Lake. The Bulldogs’ impressive run includes a win over Rudyard in the regional final, which snapped a two-year streak of Rudyard making it to the quarterfinals.
Ironwood also snapped a long streak of not making a run to the quarterfinals, as they make their first appearance since 2000 when they lost to Suttons Bay.
Their game will start at 6 p.m. in Munising.
