SUTTONS BAY — Only one football team in the state has made trips to the state championship in each of the last three years: Suttons Bay. The bad news for the Norsemen is they haven’t been able to secure the state title, finishing as the state runner-up every year.

Last season, Suttons Bay lost to Adrian Lenawee Christian for the second straight year in a 31-20 game.

“Knowing we were pretty good last year and we faced a good Adrian Lenawee team in the finals, it just made it that more difficult for us just going into it. And we’re looking forward to this season and trying to get there just one more time and see if anything can happen,” said Shawn Bramer, a senior at Lake Leelanau St. Mary, a school that partners with Suttons Bay in the co-op.

Bramer will be among the great athletes returning for Suttons Bay this season. The Norsemen haven’t lost a regular season game since 2018, going 34-3 over the last three years. All three of those losses have come in the state championship.

“Obviously, we made history, making it three times in a row. It was something really cool,” St. Mary senior Dylan Barnowski said. “But we want to get over that last final hump, that last game.”

Suttons Bay will start its season on the road on Aug. 25 against Grand Rapids NorthPointe Christian.
