HOWARD CITY – The Tri-County Vikings went 9-2 in 2021, marking the first time they had won nine games in a season since 2004.
While the team lost its quarterback and entire offensive line to graduation, it still expects to build off last season’s success and compete near the top of the CSAA Gold in 2022.
The Vikings will look to hang their hats on defense again after holding teams to under 20 points in seven of their 10 games last season.
The team to beat in the CSAA Gold, as it has been for years now, is Reed City. The Coyotes handed Tri-County its only regular season loss in 2021. Reed City went on to finish unbeaten in conference play for a second straight season.
Tri-County hasn’t beaten Reed City since 2003.
“Reed City is the team to beat. Reed City has done it for many, many years. Until someone goes and knocks them off Reed City is the favorite in our league and everyone knows that,” said Tri-County head coach Phil Butler. “We’re concentrating on Lakeview but to beat a Reed City you’ve got to be physical, you’ve got to be disciplined. You’ve got to play football and you’ve got to be tough. All those things that Reed City and Coach Shankel have installed in those guys, you’ve got to do it back to them.”
For a ninth straight year, Tri-County will open the season against Lakeview. Then, the Vikings will meet Reed City in week two.
